Patashnik, released in 1994, is the second studio album by Norwegian producer Geir Jenssen under his Biosphere moniker, and a landmark in the evolution of ambient techno. Expanding on the sound of his debut Microgravity, Jenssen crafted a record that blends pulsing rhythms, spacious atmospheres, and cinematic textures into a cohesive and immersive whole. Tracks like Novelty Waves and The Shield evoke both the chill of arctic landscapes and the propulsion of late-night club culture, creating music that feels equally suited for deep listening and movement.
What sets Patashnik apart is its ability to balance abstraction with accessibility—melodic fragments drift in and out, field recordings add texture, and subtle shifts in rhythm build a hypnotic sense of flow. The album’s title, a Russian word loosely translated as “traveler,” reflects its otherworldly journey through sound. Now regarded as a classic of ambient techno, Patashnik continues to influence electronic music with its forward-thinking production and timeless atmosphere.
Reviews:“Patashnik remains one of the defining statements of ambient techno, blending rhythm and atmosphere with rare finesse.” – AllMusic“Geir Jenssen created an album that captures both the chill of his Nordic environment and the pulse of global club culture.” – Pitchfork“Cinematic, hypnotic, and deeply immersive, Patashnik is a classic of the genre.” – The Guardian“A masterpiece of minimalist electronic music, still sounding futuristic decades after its release.” – Resident Advisor
